Ranked-choice voting
There’s a new way to vote for your city officials in 2021! The city of New York will use the Ranked-Choice Voting method for all NYC primaries and special elections for Mayor, Public Advocate, Comptroller, Borough President and City Council. Beginning this year, ranked choice voting gives New York voters more choice than ever before.

New Way to Vote
Rather than choosing just 1 candidate, now you have the option to rank up to 5 of your favorite candidates from first to fifth.

Here’s how it works:
Mark your ballot by order of preference. Ranking as many or as few candidates as you like.
• In the first column, fill in the oval next to your 1st choice candidate
• Mark your 2nd choice in the second column
• Followed by your 3rd, 4th and 5th choice—if you choose to do so—in their respective columns

Who wins:
At the close of election day, All 1st choice votes are counted. If a candidate were to receive over 50% of the first-choice votes, that candidate wins! If no candidate receives over 50% of the first-choice votes, the race moves to round 2:
• The person with the least number of first-choice votes is eliminated.
• If your first-choice candidate does not win and they’re eliminated, we then count your 2nd Choice vote
and add it to your second-choice candidate’s total.
This process continues until we have a winner.
